Father, Son, Holy Spirit!  Three in One! – HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY – June 4 & June 7, 2023

AS WE GATHER – Pastors, poets, and others have shared many images to help the faithful understand the mystery of the Holy Trinity.  One of the most lasting images has been that of the shamrock—a simple and sturdy plant with three leaves joined together on one stem.  Saint Patrick, the famed Christian missionary to Ireland in the fifth century, used the shamrock to illustrate the concept of “Three persons in One God” that is central to understanding the Trinity.  Each shamrock is at its loveliest when it is in bloom—just as those who confess the Holy Trinity are at their most beautiful and most gracious, when they show forth the presence of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in their lives.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “All Who Believe and Are Baptized”        LSB 601

We Celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Baptism as we welcome into God’s family, Riley David Matson, Kyle James Matson, and Cayden Allen Matson, sons of Elizabeth Goehl.

Wednesday-Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen

Wednesday – Opening Sentences – Isaiah 6:3b, 1 John 4:13–14, Psalm 41:13 – Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory! By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Amen and Amen.

Confession and Absolution- Beloved children of God, let us confess together that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that daily we have sinned against our gracious God and deserve His punishment now and eternally.  God the Father I have not always cared for or thanked You for Your creation and all You provide.  God the Son, my Savior, I do not always give You complete control of my life as I follow the world.  God the Holy Spirit, I do not always follow Your leading, nor use the words You give me to share with all people.  Dear Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I am sorry for all my sins done in thought, word and deed.  Forgive me in Your mercy Almighty God, be gracious to me and for the sake of Jesus, my Redeemer, grant me Your forgiveness so that, as Your redeemed child, I may find the joy of absolution and, with hearts renewed by God the Holy Spirit, serve You in time and in eternity.  In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.    Amen.

Psalm of the Day – Psalm 8

All:  O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens.    Women: Out of the mouth of babes and infants, You have established strength because of Your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.  Men: When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place,  All:  what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him?   Women: Yet You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.  Men: You have given him dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet,  Women: all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,   Men: the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.   All: O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Wednesday- Kyrie     LSB 152-  In peace let us pray to the Lord.  For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.  For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.   Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

Wednesday – Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis  LSB 154 – Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.  Lord God, Heavenly King, Almighty God and Father:  We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.  Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.  You are seated at the right hand of the Father receive our prayer.  For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.  Amen

Prayer of the day – Almighty and everlasting God, You have given us grace to acknowledge Your glory as the eternal Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, by the confession of a true faith and to worship the Unity of three person in one true God, in the power of Your Divine Majesty.  Keep us steadfast in this faith and defend us from all adversities; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading   Genesis 1:1–2, 31, 2:1-4a, John 1:1-4   (The account of creation by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit)    Genesis 1:1-2 – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.  31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning – the sixth day.   Genesis 2:1-4a  Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.  By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.  And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.  This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

John 1:1-4– In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

Epistle    Acts 2:14a, 22–36 – (The sermon of Peter at Pentecost) –    14  Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: 22-36   “Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.  This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.  But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.  David said about him: “‘I saw the Lord always before me.  Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.  Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.  You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.’  “Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.  But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.  Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.  God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.  Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.  For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”‘  “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

Gradual and Verse  Psalm 145:3, 5b, 6b; Isaiah 6:3b – Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable. On Your wondrous works, I will meditate, and I will declare Your greatness. Alleluia. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory! Alleluia.

Holy Gospel           Matthew 28:16–20 – (Jesus gives His Great Command to the disciples) – The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-eighth chapter.    Glory to You, O Lord.

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.  When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.  Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Wednesday – Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

We thank You for all of creation and for every good gift with which You bless us.  Accept our praise, Lord, for the blessings of Holy Baptism that bind us to You newly each day.  Grant that all who partake of Christ’s holy body and blood this day be filled with Your heavenly blessing.  As we receive forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation, grant that we be sanctified in body, soul and spirit, and finally be granted our place with all Your saints in glory.  This we ask through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.     Amen

 *Announcements*

From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism: – Matthew 28:19–20 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Behold the threefold Name of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are baptized into this Name. We have been made a part of God’s family. Now, we are called to live in harmony with our new family, to be godly and live in God’s image. As God is loving, kind and generous, so are we all called to be.

The Pewpoint – THEME OF THE DAY – The Holy Triune God Recreates Us in the Image and Likeness of Christ Jesus –  The holy Triune God “created the heavens and the earth,” and “behold, it was very good” (Gen. 1:1, 31). However, after Adam and Eve fell into sin and plunged God’s good creation into decay and death, the Son of God would be “delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God” to be “crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men” (Acts 2:23). As Jesus “received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:33), He also raises up all the baptized and pours out the Spirit upon them through the preaching of His Gospel. He sends out His apostles to “make disciples of all nations” by “baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” and “teaching them to observe all that [He has] commanded” (Matt. 28:19–20). Through such baptizing and teaching — Gospel and Sacraments — the holy Triune God recreates us in the image and likeness of His incarnate Son, Jesus, the Christ, and behold, it is “very good” (Gen. 1:31).
