Guests. Welcome to Zion. We are happy to have you worship with us. Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex. About Holy Communion: We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given. If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us. If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service. To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330. Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.
As We Gather Throughout our lives, we look for people to help us when we need it. They could be a parent who can hold our hand to cross the street, a spouse who can open the pickle jar, or an expert who delivers wisdom we don’t have. Our Lord Jesus Christ sends us a helper, the comforter, the promised Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit opens our heart to faith and then fills it with heavenly wisdom. Present in our Baptism and present today in worship, the Holy Spirit keeps our hand firmly in our Savior’s, so that linked to Him by His love, we can walk confidently in our lives in His promises.
Ringing of the Bell and Welcome
Hymn “Dear Christians One and All, Rejoice” LSB 556
Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Opening Sentences Psalm 119 – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Your faithfulness endures to all generations.
Confession and Absolution – We confess our sins to God our Father by the power and work of God the Holy Spirit: Father, our Creator we have neglected You and Your commandments. Forgive us, Lord. Jesus, our Crucified and Risen Savior, we have doubted Your Word and failed to display Your love to others. Forgive us, Lord. Holy Spirit, teacher and comforter, we have trusted our own sinful hearts rather than seeking Your truth. Forgive us, Lord of all our sin in Your mercy through Christ Jesus Your Son our Lord. O Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, look on us in mercy and make Your dwelling within us. Restore us as Your rescued people to seek Your holy will. Amen. To save you from your sin, the Father gave you His very own Son. On His cross, Jesus paid your debt, died and arose to declare, “you are forgiven in Me and because I live, you also will live.” By the Spirit’s power, we trust in the forgiveness won for us by Christ, our Lord. In the stead and by the command of Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Kyrie LSB 168 – In peace let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.
Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis – Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God; You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen
Salutation – The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Prayer of the Day – O God, the giver of all that is good, by Your holy inspiration grant that we may think those things that are right and by Your merciful guiding accomplish them; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
New Testament Reading – Acts 17:16-31 – While Paul was waiting for them, Silas and Timothy, at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities” because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection and they took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.” Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
Epistle or New Testament Reading – 1 Peter 3:13-22 – Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits, to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
Verse – Alleluia. Christ has risen from the dead. God the Father has crowned him with glory and honor. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. Alleluia.
Holy Gospel – John 14:15-21 – The Holy Gospel according St. John, the Fourteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ.
Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving – It is truly good, right, and beneficial that we would give thanks to You, O Triune God, making our supplication in the name of Jesus Christ, our risen Savior, who in keeping the Father’s will, won salvation by His death and resurrection, and in giving His Holy Spirit, grants life to all who believe. Held in our baptismal covenant, we rejoice with all the saints in every time and place, eagerly anticipating the consummation of Christ’s redeeming work, as You gather us with angels and archangels, to laud and magnify Your glorious name. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Amen.
