 GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather – We do not deserve the attention God lavishes on us!  As He calls us to Himself, we are on the receiving end of boundless love and mercy from Him, shown especially in the death and resurrection of our Lord, to whom we have been united.  We share the same faith of Abraham.  Our sin is what Jesus went to the cross for and His empty tomb invites us to eternal life.  When the Pharisees questioned Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners, He admonished them in saying, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick” (Matthew 9:12). God calls those who need to be saved—sinners like us—with the gracious Good News proclaimed to us in worship this day.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee”     LSB 803

Invocation- In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Opening Sentences – Psalm 119 – You have dealt well with your servant, O Lord, according to your word.  Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments.

Confession and Absolution –  Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition.      All:  Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.   Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life.  Amen.    Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Kyrie      LSB 168 – In peace let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.    For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.  For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen

Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis – Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,    We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.    Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God;   You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.  You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer.  For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.  Amen

Prayer of the Day –   Almighty and most merciful God, You sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, to seek and to save the lost.  Graciously open our ears and our hearts to hear His call and to follow Him by faith that we may feast with Him forever in His kingdom; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Old Testament Reading – Hosea 5:15-6:6 – I will return again to my place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress earnestly seek me.  “Come, let us return to the Lord; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up.  After two days he will revive us;  on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him.  Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.”  What shall I do with you, O Ephraim?  What shall I do with you, O Judah?  Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away.  Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
I have slain them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment goes forth as the light.
For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Romans 4:13-25 –    It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.  For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.  Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham.  He is the father of us all.  As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.”  He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.  Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”  Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.  Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.  This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”  The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.  He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

Verse – Alleluia!  Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.  On your wondrous works, I will meditate, and I will declare your greatness.  Jesus said; “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”  Alleluia.

Holy Gospel – Matthew 9:9-13 – The Holy Gospel according St. Matthew, the Nineth chapter.  Glory to You, O Lord.     As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth.  “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.   While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.  When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”  On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.  But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’  For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”  This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

We Confess our faith and Remember our Baptism – Dearly beloved, Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”  In the last chapter of Mark, our Lord promises, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.”  And the apostle Peter has written, “Baptism now saves you.”   Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth?   Yes, I believe.     Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He will come to judge the living and the dead?    Yes, I believe.   Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?    Yes, I believe.

Prayers of the Church

The Lord’s Prayer –   Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior.  With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.  Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament.  Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.            Amen.
