As We Gather  In the Scriptures there are numerous passages that emphasize the value of spiritual walking for God’s children. Paul writes to the Galatians, “But I say, walk by the Spirit” (5:16), and he reminds the believers in Christ at Corinth that “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Hymn writers follow: “Let us ever walk with Jesus” (LSB 685:1) and “I want to walk as a child of the light” (LSB 411:1). May we be blessed today by our walk through our worship service in our God’s presence, as He comes to us with His love, forgiveness and strength and we respond in praise!

Opening Sentences – Psalm 37 – Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.

Confession and Absolution – It is good and right that we should make confession of our sins. The Small Catechism informs and directs us; “Confession has two parts.  First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven.”  Humble yourselves then before God, confess your sins to Him, and implore His forgiveness.     All:  O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a troubled and repentant sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your present and eternal punishment.  By nature, I am a sinful creature.  In thought, word, and deed I have continually transgressed Your Law. For the sake of the suffering and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a contrite being.  Forgive me all my sins and grant me the power of Your Holy Spirit that I may amend my sinful life.      God be gracious to you and strengthen your faith.  Amen.     As you believe, so let it be.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Prayer of the Day – Almighty God, Your Son willingly endured the agony and shame of the cross for our redemption.  Grant us courage to take up our cross daily and follow Him wherever He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Old Testament Reading – Jeremiah 15:15-21 – Lord, you understand; remember me and care for me.  Avenge me on my persecutors.  You are long-suffering—do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.  When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, Lord God Almighty.  I never sat in the company of revelers, never made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand was on me and you had filled me with indignation.  Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable?  You are to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails.  Therefore this is what  the Lord says: “If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman.  Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them.  I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you,” declares the Lord.  “I will save you from the hands of the wicked and deliver you from the grasp of the cruel.”

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Romans 12:9-21 –   Love must be sincere.  Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in love.  Honor one another above yourselves.  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.  Practice hospitality.   Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.  Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.  Live in harmony with one another.  Do not be proud but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.    Do not repay anyone evil for evil.  Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.  On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.  In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Gradual – Alleluia.  Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing!  Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.  Alleluia

Holy Gospel – Matthew 16:21-28  – The Holy Gospel according St. Matthew, the Sixteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord.     From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.   Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said.  “This shall never happen to you!”  Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!  You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”  Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.  For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.  What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?  Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?  For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.  “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”  This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Proper Preface and Prayer of Thanksgiving -It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, Lord our God, for You have graciously blessed us through the Word Incarnate, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who for our sake died on the cross and rose from the dead to put an end to death.  We rejoice in His call to discipleship, taking up our crosses and joyfully following in His way.  Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and have showed Your gracious power to us through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. We give You thanks that in His most Holy Supper You reveal Your sacred presence among us.  Grant that we may receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood as we gather at His command.     Amen.

Post-Communion Thanksgiving

Holy Father, we ask You by this blessed food and drink to deliver Your church from every evil and to teach it to love You perfectly and make it truly one, even as this bread was made from many grains of wheat to become the carrier of the body of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.     Amen.
