As We Gather  In today’s Gospel, our Lord Jesus moved beyond His ministry initially among the Jews to the Gentile woman of Canaan.  The miracle greater than the healing of her daughter was her great faith in Jesus addressing Him, saying, “Lord, help me”.  Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord said He would bring “foreigners” to His “house of prayer for all peoples”.  The early church learned how the Gentiles are grafted into Israel, making the Christian Church the fulfillment of the true Israel, God’s people!  The outreach of the Gospel of Christ continues through His church, calling all. Because of God’s effective call, you can have steadfast confidence in His loving kindness and mercy.

 Opening Sentences – Psalm 67:1-3 – May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you!  Let the nations be glad and sing for joy.

Confession and Absolution – Though we are undeserving, we come to the Lord saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David.”  Let us seek the Lord while He may be found to grant us healing, help, and forgiveness.  All:  Lord Jesus Christ, Son of David, Son of God, we are severely oppressed and ruined by sin in all our thoughts, words, and actions.  We have sinned against You by our own fault.  We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  Have mercy on us, O Lord, and grant us forgiveness, help, and salvation.  Amen.  Almighty God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and of all who believe in the name of His only begotten Son, is the God of mercy and for the sake of His Son forgives us all our sins.  Therefore, in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

 Kyrie – In peace let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.   For the Peace from above and for our salvation.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.     For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.         Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen

 Prayer of the Day – Almighty and everlasting Father, You give Your children many blessings even though we are undeserving.  In every time of trial and temptation grant us steadfast confidence in Your loving-kindness and mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

 

  Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 56:1, 6-8 – This is what the Lord says: “Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is close at hand and my righteousness will soon be revealed.  Vs6-8  And foreigners who bind themselves to the Lord to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and who hold fast to my covenant, these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer.  Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”  The Sovereign Lord declares, he who gathers the exiles of Israel: “I will gather still others to them besides those already gathered.”

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Romans 11:1-2, 13-15, 28-32   –     I ask, then, has God rejected his people?  By no means!  For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.  God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. .  vs13-15  Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them.  For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?  vs28-32  As regards the gospel, they are enemies of God for your sake.  But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.  For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.  Just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy.  For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

Gospel Reading – Matthew 15:21-28 – The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 15th chapter.  Glory to you, O Lord.       Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.  And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.”  But he did not answer her a word.  And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.”  He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”  But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”  And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”  She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”  Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith!  Be it done for you as you desire.”  And her daughter was healed instantly.    This is the Gospel of the Lord.  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostle’s Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Preface – The Lord be with you.    And also with you.    Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.    Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.   It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and all places give thanks to You, Lord our God, for You have graciously blessed us through the Word incarnate, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who has come in the flesh and for our sake died on the cross and rose from the dead to put an end to death.  Rejoicing in our Baptism, which creates faith in our hearts and daily renews us, we laud and magnify Your holy name. With joy we join in the unending praise of the angels and archangels and all the company of heaven in singing;

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior.   With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.       Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit.  Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament.
