Altar Guild for September:   Connie Kreitzman     Thank you.

GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather  Jesus is blunt about the cost of discipleship.  He does not sugarcoat the life He calls us to live in the baptismal waters, but neither does He diminish His promises, gifts, and blessings that accompany our life of faith.  Today He calls us to count the cost, knowing that the life of a Christian is constantly tested and tried by our affection for the things of this life, our vulnerability to the enemies of the faith, and the weakness of our own sinful flesh.  Part of that cost is not just in what you desire, but also in what you are willing to give up for the sake of Christ and His kingdom.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “O God, My Faithful God”     LSB  696

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen.

Opening Sentences – Psalm 1 – Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law, he meditates day and night.  Amen.  Let us come into the presence of our Lord with Praise and Thanksgiving.  Amen.

Confession and Absolution –  All:  Most holy and merciful Father, we confess to You, and to one another, and to the whole company of saints in heaven and on earth, that we have sinned by our own fault, in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved You with our whole heart, mind or strength.  We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We have not forgiven others as You have forgiven us.  Have mercy and forgive us, Lord.  We have taken Your grace and mercy for granted and have lived as though You did not matter and we mattered most of all.  We confess to You, O Lord, that we have done the evil Your Word tells us we are not to do and have not done the good You command us to do.  We confess that we have tried to hide our sin from You and from one another and have not confessed our sin honestly before You or to those whom we have hurt.  I am truly sorry for all my sin.  I humbly ask for Your forgiveness in Christ my Lord.  Amen    Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.    Amen

Kyrie  LSB 168 – In peace let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.  For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.   For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen.

Hymn of PraiseGloria in Excelsis – Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.    Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God; You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.   You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer.  For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.  Amen

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – O merciful Lord, You did not spare Your only Son but delivered Him up for us all.  Grant us courage and strength to take up our cross of living our faith and follow Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Old Testament Reading – Deuteronomy 30:15-20 – See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.  For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.  But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed.  You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.  This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.  For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Philemon 1-21 – Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker—also to Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier—and to the church that meets in your home: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.  I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus.   I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ.  Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.  Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love.  It is as none other than Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus—that I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains.  Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.  I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you.  I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel.   But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do would not seem forced but would be voluntary.  Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever—no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother.  He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord.  So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me.  If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me.  I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand.  I will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your very self.  I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.  Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.

Verse – Alleluia.  Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of my Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.  Alleluia.

Holy Gospel – Luke 14:24-35 – The Holy Gospel according St. Luke, the fourteenth chapter.   Glory to You, O Lord.   I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”  Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.  And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.  “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower.  Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?  For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king.  Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?  If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.  In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.  “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.  “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”    This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed –   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sermon

Prayers of the Church

We Gather our Tithes and Offerings

*Service of the Sacrament*

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 – The Lord be with you.  And also with you.    Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.  Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Sanctus  LSB 178

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior.  With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.  Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament.  Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.       Amen.

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

The Proclamation of Christ – As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.   Amen.  Come, Lord Jesus.  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always.   Amen

Post-Communion Thanksgiving – Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.  His steadfast love endures forever.   We give thanks to You, gracious Father, for what You have revealed to us through Your Son.  As Your Spirit continues to call us through Your Word, grant us ears to hear, wills to obey, hands to serve, and hearts filled with the grace that You have bestowed on us in this Holy Supper.  Strengthen and preserve us all our days; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.
