GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather  Today is the First Sunday in Advent.  We begin to prepare our hearts, souls and minds to celebrate the coming of our Lord in Bethlehem.  Our readings today also remind us that we are to be prepared for our Lord’s second coming.  We will not know the time or hour!  We know that that time of salvation is near.  Be ready to go to the one who sits at the right hand of God and stand before Him at His judgment seat, forgiven, and ready to be welcomed into your eternal home-heaven.

Invocation and our Confessing our Sin and Being Forgiven in Christ

In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen   Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.  If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?    But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.    Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition.  Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God be merciful to me, a sinner.          Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life.  Amen.    Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit.  Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen    Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen

Our Response to God forgiveness Psalm 32 – I acknowledged my sin to You, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.  You are a hiding place for me; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with shouts of deliverance.

Psalm – 118:25-28  antiphon Zechariah 9:9 –   Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation.  Save us, we pray, O Lord!  O Lord, we pray, give us success!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!  We bless you from the house of the Lord.  The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us.  Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar!  You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you.    Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.  Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation.

Prayer of the Day – Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 2:1-5 –   This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem: In the last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.  Many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the temple of the God of Jacob.  He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.”  The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.  He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples.  They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.  Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.  Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD.

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Romans 13:11-14 – And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.  The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.  So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.  Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.  Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Verse – Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.  Alleluia.  Lift up your heads, O gates!  And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.  Alleluia.

Holy Gospel – Matthew 24:36-44 – The Holy Gospel according St. Matthew the 24th chapter.   Glory to You, O Lord.       “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.  As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.  For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.  That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.  Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.  Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.  “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.  But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.  So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.    This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon

Apostles’ Creed –  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

We gather our Tithes and Offerings

*Service of the Sacrament*

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 –    The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, whose way John the Baptist prepared, proclaiming Him the promised Messiah, the very Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and calling sinners to repentance that they might escape from the wrath to be revealed when He comes again in glory.  Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Sanctus     LSB 208

Prayer of Thanksgiving – In the dawn of time, You spoke creation and all things into being and proclaimed them good.  In many and various ways, O Lord, You spoke through the prophets the promise of a Savior to restore Your people from the exile of sin and death.  In the fullness of time, You sent forth Your Son, born of a virgin by the Holy Spirit.  Now, You continue to send forth to us the fruits of His redeeming work in this Holy Communion of His body and blood, according to His own promise and testament.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.    Amen.

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ  1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 – As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.      Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.     O Lord keep us faithful until You return to take us to be with you.  Hear us now as we pray the prayer you taught us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.   Amen.

Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always.    Amen.

Post-Communion Thanksgiving – Lord Jesus, prepare us for that eternal Sabbath when You will rest in us, just as now You work in us.  The rest that we shall enjoy will be Yours, just as the work that we now do is Your work done through us.  But You, O Lord, are eternally at work and eternally at rest.  It is not in time that You see or in time that You move or in time that You rest, yet You make what we see in time.  You make time itself and the repose which comes when time ceases; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Benediction      Numbers 6:24–26 – The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and X give you peace.   Amen.

Dismissal – Go in peace! Serve the Lord!      Thanks be to God.
