GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather  There are many blessings in our lives we can point to everyday, but the biggest blessing we have is that we are God’s children guided, guarded, protected, and provided for by our Savior Jesus Christ.  Our heavenly Father has claimed and cleansed us in the waters of Baptism.  As God’s children, we are saints now and forever—not because of anything we have done or will do, but because of what our Lord has done and continues to do for us.  Today we celebrate the fact that even though we are sinners, we are also saints who worship our Lord on this side of the altar as all the saints who have realized heaven before us, worship Him at the same altar in heaven.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn  “Holy, Holy, Holy”       LSB 507

Invocation

Opening Sentences – Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die.  For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!  For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.  And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”

Confession and Absolution – John wrote, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”  The devil, the world, and our sinful nature lead us to live lives that do not reflect this reality.  Let us confess our sins to our heavenly Father.      All:  Most merciful God and Father, We confess to You that our lives do not always reveal that we are really Your children and that You are our Father.  We admit that we sin against You and others with our thoughts, words, and actions.  In Your righteousness, forgive us and cleanse us from all our unrighteousness.  Restore the joy of Your salvation to us and sustain us with a willing spirit.  Amen.     John reminds us, “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be, has not yet appeared; but we know that when He/Jesus appears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.  And everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure.”  In the mercy of our heavenly Father, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us and purifies us from all our sins.  To those who believe in Jesus Christ, He gives the power to become the children of God and gives them the Holy Spirit.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son  and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.    Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven!      Alleluia!   Amen!

Introit of the Day Psalm 31 & Revelation 7 – These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation.  They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.       In You, O Lord, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in Your righteousness deliver me.  For You are my rock and my fortress; and for Your name’s sake You lead me and guide me.  Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.   These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation.  They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Kyrie – Lord Have Mercy, Christ Have Mercy, Lord have mercy

Prayer of the Day – Almighty and everlasting God, You make us saints through calling us to faith and cleansing us in the waters of Baptism.  Lead us to imitate the lives of the saints who have gone before us as they imitated Christ our Lord so that together with them, we come to the indescribable joys of heaven You have prepared for those who love You; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Our First New Testament Reading – Revelation 7:9-17 – After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb.  They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.  And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”  All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures.  They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen!  Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever.  Amen!”   Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”  I answered, “Sir, you know.”  And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.  Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.  ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst.  The sun will not beat down on them, ’nor any scorching heat.  For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’  ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”

Our Second New Testament Reading – 1 John 3:1-3 – See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!  And that is what we are!  The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known.  But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.  All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Verse – Alleluia.  Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith and run the race marked out for us.  Alleluia.

Our Gospel Reading – Matthew 5:1-12  – The Holy Gospel According to St. Matthew the fifth chapter.  Glory to You O Christ.     Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down.  His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.  He said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.  Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.  Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.  Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.  Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.  This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostle’s Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sermon

Hymn **vs6-8**  “For All the Saints”        LSB 677

We Remember our Baptism and the Saints who have received Eternal Life – In Holy Baptism, God’s children are clothed with the robe of Christ’s righteousness, which covers all of our sins.  Paul wrote: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?        We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”

Today, with God’s children throughout the Christian Church, we remember all those who have realized their eternal crown of life and live with Him in His presence for all eternity.  We will observe a moment of silence to remember in our hearts those family members and friends whom we miss but know we will see again as we join them in the   church triumphant.                   A moment of silence to reflect.

Let us pray.  Almighty and everlasting God, You knit together Your faithful people of all times and places into one holy communion, one family, the mystical body of Your Son, Jesus Christ.  Grant us so to follow Your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that, together with them, we may come to the unspeakable joys You have prepared for those who love You;  through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Prayers of the Church

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

We gather our Tithes and Offerings

We Celebrate the Service of the Sacrament

Preface and Proper Preface – The Lord be with you.   And Also with you.   Lift up your hearts.  We lift them up to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to Give Him thanks and praise.     It is good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, our Maker and King, for You sent Your Son to be the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.  In the communion of all Your saints, we are gathered into the Body of Your Son.  You purify Your children in the waters of Baptism and robe us with the righteousness of Christ.  You bless and encourage us by the faith of the saints who have gone before us so that as we run this race, we may finish it and receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.  Therefore with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Sanctus                               LSB 161

Prayer of Thanksgiving – By faith, the saints who have gone before us clung to Your promises, leaving an example and encouragement for us who now walk by faith and long to see You face to face.  Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink the body and blood of Your Son in this Holy Supper. Join us in unending praise with our forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the prophets, apostles, evangelists, martyrs, and all the saints in glory who have run the race, kept the faith, fought the good fight and been crowned in glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray.  Amen.

Post Communion Canticle – Thank the Lord  p.164

Post Communion Thanksgiving – Heavenly Father, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of Your Son’s body and blood.  Lead us to lay aside every weight and sin that clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Keep us firm in the true faith that we may celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His eternal kingdom when He returns; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and rules with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.    Amen.
