GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather One of the great mysteries of the Christian faith can be summed up in the word “near.” “Near” can indicate something that is almost here but hasn’t yet arrived.  At the same time, “near” can point to something already with us, like those “near and dear” to our hearts.  The word resounds with feelings of the here and now, and the not quite yet.  Today in worship, Your Savior, Jesus Christ, is near!  He is present in the here and now, delivering grace upon grace, and He is on His way, bringing the fullness of His freedom.  Praise the God who comes near in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord!

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “The Clouds of Judgment Gather”     LSB 513

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Opening Sentences Psalm 98:1-4 – Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation for Him.  The LORD has made His salvation known and revealed His righteousness to the nations.  He has remembered His love and His faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.  Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song and with music.

Confession and Absolution – If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.     A time of silence to confess those sins weighing heavy on our hearts.       All:   Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.  We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.  Amen        In the mercy of the almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins.  By the command of Jesus Christ our Lord, I forgive you all your sin, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen  To Those who believe in Jesus Christ, He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit.       May God who began this good work in us bring it to completion at the coming of our Lord.  Amen

Kyrie      LSB 168 – In peace let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.     For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.  For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.  Lord have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen.

Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis – Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.        Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God; You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.  You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer.  For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.  Amen

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – O Lord, almighty and ever-living God, You have given exceedingly great and precious promises to those who trust in You. Rule and govern our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that we may live and abide forever in Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament Reading – Malachi 4:1-6 –     “Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace.  All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the LORD Almighty.  “Not a root or a branch will be left to them.  But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays.  And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.  Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the LORD Almighty.  “Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.  “See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.  He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”

Epistle or New Testament Reading – 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13 –    In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.  For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example.  We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it.  On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you.  We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate.  For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”  We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive.  They are not busy; they are busybodies.  Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat.  And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.

Verse – Alleluia. These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation.  They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.  Straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Alleluia.

Holy Gospel – Luke 21:5-28, 31-33, 36 – The Holy Gospel according St. Luke, the twenty-first  chapter.   Glory to You, O Lord.       Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.”  “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen?  And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”  He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived.  For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.  When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened.  These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”  Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.  There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.  “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.  And so you will bear testimony to me.  But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.  For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.  You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.  Everyone will hate you because of me.  But not a hair of your head will perish.  Stand firm, and you will win life.  “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.  Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.  For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.  How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!  There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.  They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations.  Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.  “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars.  On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.  People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.  At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.  When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”     Vs31-33 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.  “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.  Vs36  Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”    This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed –    I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 –    The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.  Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Sanctus     LSB 178

Prayer of Thanksgiving –    Blessed are You, Lord God of all creation, for You have displayed Your power and Your provision in the merciful sending of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We praise You that He wore our flesh and bore our sins, and that He invites us to His Table to share in the fruits of His victory. Gather us in faith to receive the true body and blood of our Savior, Jesus, as those in need of His redemption. Give us hearts that overflow with gratitude and yearn for the nearness of our Redeemer, who died, who is risen, and who is coming again, through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

The proclamation of Christ –    As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.      O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment.  So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Pax Domini         LSB 180 – The peace of the Lord be with you always.  Amen

Benediction   Numbers 6:24–26 –    The Lord, who calls You by name, bless you and keep you.
