GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather  Pentecost is a season of learning.  Our lesson today is all about not only believing and following our God and Savior, but living our faith in front of the world even when challenged because of that faith.  Moses ran in fear of the world, but God showed him how He was with him and told him to get back to his calling.  Paul reminds us that we have been set free from our sin, do not go back to that kind of life.  Jesus close to His ascension, reminds us of the cost of following Him in a sinful world.  The question is: Will we trust in the still small voice of our Almighty God, live free from our sin in His grace, and follow our Lord because we know that what we have been given through faith is greater than anything this world and satan will or can offer to us?

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn  Sing Praise to God, the Highest Good”         LSB 819

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

As we confess our sin, we confess the faith given to us in our Baptism

Do you renounce the devil?    Yes, I renounce him.

Do you renounce all his works and ways?      Yes, I renounce them.

Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth?

Yes, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son?

Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?       Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life X everlasting.

In Holy Baptism God the Father has made you members of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and heirs with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian and apostolic Church, that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.  Do you confess all your sin, and are you heartily sorry for them all, and ask God in His mercy to forgive you for the sake of His innocent Son, Jesus Christ who died for all your sin?

Yes, I confess, and I am sorry for all my sin.  God forgive me a repentant sinner.

Upon this your confession…..

Psalm 16 – Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.  I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”  As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.  The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.  The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.  The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;        indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.  I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.  I have set the Lord always before me;   because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.  Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.  For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.  You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.   Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.   Amen.

Prayer of the Day – Lord of all power and might, author and giver of all good things, graft into our hearts the love of Your name and nourish us with all goodness that we may love and serve our neighbor; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.     Amen.

Old Testament Reading – 1 Kings 19:9b-21 –  “What are you doing here, Elijah?”  He replied, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty.  The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword.  I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”  The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”  Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind.  After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.  After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.  When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.  Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”  He replied, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty.  The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword.  I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”  The LORD said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus.  When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.  Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.  Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.  Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”  So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat.  He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair.  Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.  Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah.  “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.”  “Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”  So Elisha left him and went back.  He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them.  He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate.  Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.

Our Epistle or New Testament Reading – Galatians 5:1, 13-25 – It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.  Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.  Vs13-25   You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.  But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.  For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.  So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.  They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.  The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.  I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.  Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Verse Luke 9:51 – Alleluia.  When the days drew near for him to be taken up, He set His face to go to Jerusalem.  Alleluia.

The Holy Gospel – Luke 9:51-62 – The Holy Gospel according St. Luke the ninth chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.  And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.  When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?”  But Jesus turned and rebuked them.  Then he and his disciples went to another village.  As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”   Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”  He said to another man, “Follow me.”  But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”  Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”  Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”  Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.    This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon

Prayers of the Church

We gather our Tithes and Offerings

Service of the Sacrament

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 – The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.          It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who by His perfect obedience fulfilled the Law on our behalf, and by His death and resurrection secured the blessings of salvation for all who would believe and trust in Him.  You feed Your faithful people, grafted as branches onto Christ, the Vine, in this Supper with the fruits of His cross, that in receiving the true body and blood of the Savior, we might be forgiven and equipped for every good work, until in eternity we join with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven to honor and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Sanctus

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life, we praise and adore You for the gift of faith that You give and cultivate among Your people, connecting us to the redeeming work of Jesus. Receive our thanks and strengthen our hearts yet again as we partake of this Holy Meal, secure in faith and forgiveness, and emboldened to display the hallmarks of having been made righteous through the victorious sacrifice of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Father, one God, now and forever.    Amen.

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ  1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 – As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.      Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.  O Lord keep us faithful until You return to take us to be with you.  Hear us now as we pray the prayer you taught us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always.    Amen.

SUNDAY SCHOOL… A new and retooled Sunday School is being proposed for Zion.  The goal would be to reach out to the Clyman community this fall.  It will be given a new name as it will not meet on Sundays.  An example could be Zion Bible Club.  Before this is offered, we will need people in place to help teach, organize and lead.  Contact Erica Goehl or Deanna Gochanour.   Thank you.

QUILTING – The quilters meet on Thursdays 11am to 2pm. If interested, contact Caroline Jeffers as they do not meet every Thursday. Donations of fabric, sheets (flat or fitted), and yarn are always appreciated. You do not have to know how to sew as there are many non-sewing tasks to be completed. All are welcome to join us for the quilting fun!  Next get together is July 17th 11am – 2pm.

Please help yourself to the pictures on the table in the narthex.

JUST A REMINDER…  If you are the last person leaving the church, please be sure to check that all lights are turned off, and don’t forget about the bathrooms. Also, make sure that all the doors are locked. Double check them by giving the door a good tug after they have closed to make sure the lock has latched.

Please keep the following in your Special Prayers:

We rejoice with Tye Bader and Taylor Miescke who were married on Saturday June 21st.  May God bless their marriage with His love, patience, guidance and care.

We pray for a friend of Dan and Marti who is going through treatments for cancer.

Pray for the following in need of healing: Dee Dee Wille, Dawn Pint, & Joyce Weisjohn.

The family of Gretchen, a friend of Theresa’s brother Steve, who was given her crown of life.

We continue to pray for Dick Basol who is in rehab at Clearview.

We keep in our prayers all in our congregation who are recovering from surgery, and all who are in need of God’s comfort and healing.

The new Portals of Prayer are here.  They are located on the table in the Narthex and behind the pews. Be sure to pick up a copy.
