GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather  We are celebrating Epiphany!  In our Readings we are shown that the Messiah was not just for the nation of Israel, but for all!  In the Maji we see Isaiah’s prophecy in real life- “nations shall come to Your light and kings to the brightness of your dawn” (Isaiah 60:3).  The wealth of the nations will come as they respond to the birth of God’s King who would bring light into the darkness of the world- “bearing gold and incense, and proclaiming the praise of the Lord” (Isaiah 60:6).  Today we bring our praise to our Heavenly Father for the Light-Jesus Christ our Lord. We give to that King the offerings of our hearts, souls and lives!  The treasures to set before our Savior and King.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “The Star Proclaims the King is Here”     LSB 399

Invocation –In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Opening Sentences Psalm 72:1-2,18-19 – Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness.  May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice.     Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.  Praise be to his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and Amen.

Confession – As the psalmist declares, the Lord searches us, knows us, is ever-present with us, and leads us.  He listens to us as we speak to Him, confess our sins to Him and ask for His forgiveness.  Let us confess our sins to God our Father.  A time of silence to confess those sins weighing heavy on our hearts.     All: Almighty God, King of all, we confess to You that we are sinful by nature.  We have willingly lived in the darkness of our sin, rather than Your light.  Our selfish thoughts, harmful words, and faithless actions reveal the depth our sinfulness.  Heavenly Father, for the sake of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who became flesh for us, forgive us our sins and restore us in Your grace and love.  Amen

Absolution – Upon this your confession, I as a called and ordained servant of the Word, Jesus Christ, I announce His grace unto you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Kyrie      LSB 168 – In peace let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.    For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.              Lord, have mercy.    For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.      Lord, have mercy.  For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.  Amen.

Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis – Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.   Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God; You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.  You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer.  For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.  Amen

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – O God, by the leading of a star You made known Your only-begotten Son to the Gentiles.  Lead us, who know You by faith, to enjoy in heaven the fullness of Your divine presence; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 60:1-6 – “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.  See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you.  Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.  “Lift up your eyes and look about you: All assemble and come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the hip.  Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come.  Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah.  And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense and proclaiming the praise of the LORD.

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Ephesians 3:1-12 – For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—  Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.  In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.  This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.  I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.  Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.  His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.

Gradual and Verse – Praise the Lord, all nations!  Extol him, all peoples!  For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.  Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts!     Alleluia.  Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?  For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him. Alleluia.

Holy Gospel – Matthew 2:1-12 – The Holy Gospel according St. Matthew, the Second chapter.  Glory to You, O Lord.   After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?  We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”  When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.  When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.  “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”  Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.  He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child.  As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”  After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.  When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.  On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.  Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.  And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.  This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sermon

Prayers of the Church

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

We Gather our Tithes and Offerings

* Service of the Sacrament *

Preface and Proper Preface – The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.  It is indeed good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to You, O Lord, holy Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Sharing our life, He lived among us to reveal Your glory and love, that our darkness should give way to His own brilliant light.  Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:
