GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather  The season of Pentecost has arrived!  With the arrival of the Holy Spirit, this season of the Church Year is marked by growth.  We see evidence of the growth the Spirit is seeking in this week’s Readings.  The Lord and giver of life seeks to see His people grow faithful hearts through faithful worship, resulting in faithful service.  When the way ahead isn’t as clear or as comfortable as we would like, we rely on the Lord’s wisdom, leading us back to His faithful servant, Jesus Christ, who clears the obstacles of our sinfulness and comforts us with His Word and His body and blood.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “Amazing Grace”      LSB 744

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Opening Sentences – Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your love.  The Lord has bared His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.  Seek the Lord while He may be found;  call upon Him while He is near.

Confession and Absolution – Seeking our Lord, His wisdom, and His grace, we confess:  Almighty and all-merciful God, in wisdom You have created all things, and in grace, You seek the lost and erring. Yet, through our selfish choices and sinful nature, we ignore Your wisdom and refuse Your grace. We prefer our own way, resisting the Holy Spirit and His work of bringing forth the fruits of faithfulness. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, console and correct us, that we might forsake our wicked ways and unrighteous thoughts and turn to You, the God who has compassion and abundant pardon.        The Lord is gracious, for He declares, “Listen to Me, you stubborn of heart, you who are far from righteousness: I bring near My righteousness; it is not far off, and My salvation will not delay.”  The Lord has brought His righteousness in giving His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for you.  Through Him, and Him alone, you have forgiveness, life, and salvation.  In the stead and by the command of Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen.

Psalm 3(antiphon vs8) – Salvation belongs to the Lord; your blessing be on your people!  O Lord, how many are my foes!  Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, there is no salvation for him in God.  But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.  I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.  I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.  I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around.  Arise, O Lord!  Save me, O my God!  For you strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked.      Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;  as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.  Salvation belongs to the Lord; your blessing be on your people!

Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis         LSB 187 –   Pastor:      Glory be to God on high:  We sing

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – O God, You have prepared for those who love You such good things as surpass our understanding. Cast out all sins and evil desires from us, and pour into our hearts Your Holy Spirit to guide us into all blessedness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.     Amen.

Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 65:1-9“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me.  To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’   All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations—a people who continually provoke me to my very face, offering sacrifices in gardens and burning incense on altars of brick; who sit among the graves and spend their nights keeping secret vigil; who eat the flesh of pigs, and whose pots hold broth of impure meat; who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me, for I am too sacred for you!’  Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day.  “See, it stands written before me: I will not keep silent but will pay back in full; I will pay it back into their laps—both your sins and the sins of your ancestors,” says the LORD.  “Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains and defied me on the hills, I will measure into their laps the full payment for their former deeds.”  This is what the LORD says: “As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes and people say, ‘Don’t destroy it, there is still a blessing in it,’ so will I do in behalf of my servants; I will not destroy them all.  I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, and from Judah those who will possess my mountains; my chosen people will inherit them, and there will my servants live.

The Epistle or New Testament Reading – Galatians 3:23-4:7   – Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.  So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith.  Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.  So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,  for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.  There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.  4:1-7  What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate.  The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father.  So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world.  But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.  Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”  So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

Gradual and Verse – The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart, the word of faith that we proclaim.  For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.  Alleluia.  Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.  Alleluia.

Holy Gospel – Luke 8:26-39 –  The Holy Gospel according St. Luke, the eighth chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.

They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.  When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.  When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?  I beg you, don’t torture me!”  For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.  Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”  “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him.  And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.  A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside.  The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission.  When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.  When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside,  and the people went out to see what had happened.  When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.  Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured.  Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear.  So he got into the boat and left.  The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.”  So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.     This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed – I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.  And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.   And I believe in the Holy Spirit,   the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life X of the world to come.    Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those who You created and sent Your only begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior.  To all the nations He declares, “I am the way” and “no one comes to the Father except through Me.”  We give You thanks and praise that through His obedience and sacrifice on the cross, Jesus Christ has made a way for sinners like us to receive forgiveness, reconciliation, and redemption.  Feed us with His true body and blood that our lives might abound in faith and good works, and gather us with the faithful from the ends of the earth, to the marriage feast of the Lamb, our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.   Amen.
