GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather In His earthly life, Jesus went from place-to-place teaching with disciples or followers who listened to the truths He taught.  Walking with Jesus was a great blessing!  In faith each day, Jesus walks with us.  Whether we hear the Gospel teachings of our Lord in the same setting week by week or find ourselves in a variety of worship locations and settings, we, too, find blessing in hearing Him as did His first followers no matter where He comes to us or where we are worshipping Him.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “Let the Earth Now Praise the Lord”     LSB  352

Opening Sentences Psalm – Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!  The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth,       Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.  For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.  Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Confession and Absolution – Let us humble ourselves before God, confess our sins to Him, and ask His gracious forgiveness for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord.        All:  We now confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and before one another, that we are sinful human beings by nature and by deed.  We have given in to sinful worry and have not always put our trust in God and His gracious blessings in our lives.  We have not always been good stewards of the many gifts that God graciously gives us and have focused on keeping things for ourselves rather than sharing them with others.  We have missed opportunities to share the love of Christ with those around us and have not sought out the best for our families, our neighbors, or our communities.  We are sorry for all our sin.  God have mercy on us, forgive us, and lead us into lives of growing faith and increasing charity, and finally bring us to everlasting life.   Amen.      God is faithful and keeps His promises of full forgiveness for the sake of His Son, Jesus Christ, granting mercy and forgiveness for those who repent and turn to Him.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father,  and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen.

Kyrie      LSB 168 – In peace let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.  For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.        Lord, have mercy.  For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen.

Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis – Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.  Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God; You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.  You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer.  For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.  Amen

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – Almighty and merciful God, it is by Your grace that we live as Your people who offer acceptable service. Grant that we may walk by faith, and not by sight, in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Old Testament Reading –  Genesis 15:1-6 – After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram.  I am your shield, your very great reward.”  But Abram said, “Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”  “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”  Then the word of the LORD came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.”  He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.”  Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”  Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Hebrews 11:1-16 – Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.  This is what the ancients were commended for.  By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.  By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did.  By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.  And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.  By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”  For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.  And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.  By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.  By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.  By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.  By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.  For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.  And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.  And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.  All these people were still living by faith when they died.  They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.  People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.  If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.  Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.  Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Verse – Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing!  Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Holy Gospel – Luke 12:22-34 – The Holy Gospel according St. Luke, the twelfth chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.      Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.  For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.  Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.  And how much more valuable you are than birds!  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?  Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?  “Consider how the wild flowers grow.  They do not labor or spin.  Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!  And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.  For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.  But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.  “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.  Sell your possessions and give to the poor.  Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.     This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sermon

Prayers of the Church

We Gather our Tithes and Offerings

*Service of the Sacrament*

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 – The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Lift up your hearts.  We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to You, Lord our God.  Holy are You and great is the majesty of Your glory.  You did so love the world that You sent Your only Son to be our Redeemer.  By His sacrificial life, He has brought us salvation and has shown us the path to life eternal.  Pour upon us now the gift of the Holy Spirit that we may receive the body and blood of our Lord with true devotion.  Grant us a foretaste of the feast to come, heavenly Father, that we may with increased faith joyfully await a blessed eternity in Your glorious presence.  Amen.

 Sanctus     LSB 178

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, O Lord of heaven and earth.  We give thanks to You for having sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, to be our Redeemer, saving us from the power of sin, death, and the devil.  Invited by Your grace and supported by Your love, we come to Your Table with thanksgiving and praise.  Grant that we with true faith in Your words of promise receive the bread and wine—that is, the very body and blood of Christ—as a guarantee of the salvation that He purchased for us through His innocent suffering and death on the cross.  Receive our prayers and praises and grant us Your abiding peace. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and praise with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.    Amen.

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ –   As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.        O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

Pax Domini          LSB 180 – The peace of the Lord be with you always.  Amen

Post-Communion Prayer – Grant that Your Son’s body and blood, O Lord, which You have given us to eat and to drink, may abide in us; and let no stain of sin remain in us, whom this pure and Holy Sacrament has refreshed; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.     Amen.

Benediction      Numbers 6:24–26 – The Lord, who calls Your name, bless you and keep you.  The Lord and Savior, who has bought you at a price, make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord, who has given you faith to believe in Him, look upon you with favor and May the Father,  +  Son, and Holy Spirit give you peace.   Amen
