GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather It is easy to underestimate the darkness of sin in the world prior to the Reformation. It is just as easy to underestimate the darkness of sin in our world today. In our worship today, we do not simply recall an event, but the work of God calling His Church to return to His eternal Gospel.  We proclaim with clarity that justification by grace through faith is not some Lutheran idea, but the message of Christ, affirmed by Paul and kept in trust by the Church down through the centuries as our greatest treasure.  Just as the world long ago needed to hear the Church proclaim in an unwavering voice, Jesus Christ as Lord, crucified and Risen as the payment for all sin, so also our world today needs to hear the church proclaim the same clear life giving message of Christ, and forgiveness of sins and being justified before God is still, and always be, by grace through faith!

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “All Glory Be to God Alone” Text by Luther     LSB 948

Invocation and Call to worship

P: In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen

Lord Jesus Christ, be present now; our hearts in true devotion bow.  Your Spirit send with light divine, and let Your truth within us shine.    Unseal our lips to sing Your praise, in endless hymns through all our days.  Increase our faith and light our minds; and set us free from doubt that blinds.   All glory to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Three in One!  To You, O blessed Trinity, be praise throughout eternity.

Opening Sentences Psalm 46 – I will speak of your testimonies before kings, O Lord, and shall not be put to shame.  I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.  My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.  God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.  God has said; “Be still, and know that I am God.” The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Confession and Absolution – All: Be merciful to us, Heavenly Father, because of Your constant love.  Wipe away our sins, because of Your great mercy!  Wash away our evil, and make us clean from our sin!  We recognize our faults; we are always conscious of our sins.  We have sinned against You, and done what You consider evil.  So You are right in judging us.  You are justified in condemning us for we have been sinful from the moment of our conception. O Most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy on us and for His sake grant us forgiveness of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to our Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.     The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all!  God be merciful to you and strengthen your faith.   Amen.    As you have confessed your sins to your God and Heavenly Father and as you believe, so let it be.  By the command of my Lord, Jesus Christ, I announce His Grace unto you, and forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen!   The God who calls you to be faithful, is faithful to you.  We go in His grace and in peace to worship and serve our Lord.  Amen and Amen

Introit of the Day: Our Epistle Reading: Romans 3:19-28 –  Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.  Therefore no one will be declared righteous in His sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.      But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.  This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.  There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.  God presented Him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in His blood.  He did this to demonstrate His justice, because in His forbearance He had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished.  He did it to demonstrate His justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.  Where, then, is boasting?  It is excluded.  On what principle?  On that of observing the law?  No, but on that of faith.  For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

Prayer of the Day – Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn of Praise “Hail, O Source of Every Blessing” LSB 409

Our Epistle or New Testament – Revelation 14:6-7 –  Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

Verse Matthew 22:37b – Alleluia.  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  Alleluia.

Holy Gospel John 8:31-36 –  The Holy Gospel according St. John, the Eighth chapter.  Glory to You, O Lord.        To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone.  How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.  Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.  This is the Gospel of the Lord.     Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn “By Grace I’m Saved”                   LSB 566

Sermon

Nicene Creed – I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.   And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.  He suffered and was buried.  And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.  And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.  And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.  And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

Prayers of the Church

We Gather our Tithes and Offerings

We Celebrate the Service of the Sacrament

Proper Preface – It is good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, heavenly Father, through Christ our Lord, who by His death has conquered death, by Baptism has included us in Your family, and in this Supper has provided us the spiritual refreshment we need to live as fruitful trees, loving You and the people around us.  Therefore with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven we laud Your name and join their unending praise and singing:

Sanctus LSB 178

Prayer of Thanksgiving –   We give thanks, heavenly Father, that although in Your righteous anger You barred humankind from paradise, yet through the death and resurrection of Your Son You have ensured our entry into the eternal paradise You have prepared for those who love You.  As trees planted by streams of water are nourished to produce copious fruit, gathered in Your holy name we pray that we may receive Your Son’s body and blood in true faith and serve You daily until we gather at the eternal marriage feast in heavenly peace and joy.  To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ 1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 – As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.     O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment.  So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.
