Guests. Welcome to Zion. We are happy to have you worship with us. Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex. About Holy Communion: We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given. If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us. If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service. To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330. Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.
As We Gather Palm Sunday is also celebrated by many churches as The Sunday of the Passion. The differing celebrations reflect the contrasting, changing attitudes of the people toward Jesus from His triumphant entry to the shouts of “Hosanna in the Highest! Blessed is He who come in the name of the Lord!” which changed to “crucify Him, crucify Him!” just days later. Our service will begin with the same shouts of joy and praise, and will end with by singing about the reality of what the week would mean for our Lord as He would end His triumphant ride by carrying His cross to be crucified for us.
Ringing of the Bell and Welcome
Hymn **vs1-3** “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” LSB 442
Opening Verses – Psalm 118:19-21 – Open for me the gates of the righteous; I will enter and give thanks to the LORD. This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter. I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.
Invocation and Our Lord’s Triumphant Entry – John 12:12-15 – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
Collect of the Day – Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son as He entered His Holy City, grant that we may ever hail Him as our Savior and King, and when He comes again, may we meet Him with trusting and steadfast hearts. Heavenly Father, on this Sunday we are reminded that You sent Your Son to suffer and die on a cross for us and all sinners. Grant that we learn and follow His example of humility in serving You and by a simple faith rejoice in His resurrection unto eternal life with You. We pray this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
Hymn **vs4 & 5** “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” LSB 442
We remain seated – Psalm of the Day – Psalm 118:20-29 – This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter. I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation. The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad. LORD, save us! LORD, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you. The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine on us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, and I will exalt you. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
Our Old Testament Reading – Zechariah 9:9-12 – Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit. Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.
The Epistle or New Testament Reading – Philippians 2:5-11 – In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Our Palm Sunday Gospel Reading – Matthew 21:1-11 – As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’” The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Hymn “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” LSB 443
Sermon
Prayers of the Church
The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
We Gather our Tithes and Offerings
We prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate our Lord’s Supper – by confessing our sin and being forgiven by our God. We have heard once again of Christ’s humility, suffering and death for us. Through God’s inspiration, Paul has called on us to have the same attitude as Christ Jesus our Lord. With that call in mind, I ask you to humble yourself before God your Father, and confess your sin before Him. Do you confess before Him that you are a sinner and that you have sinned against Him and others? And do you understand that by confessing your sin, you are acknowledging that you stand under the wrath of a holy, just God in whose presence there can be no sin or evil?
Yes. I am a sinner who stands condemned under my God’s law. Yes I understand that I deserve His eternal punishment for my sin.
Do you also understand that even though your sin makes you an enemy of your holy just God, He loves you in His Son and calls you to repent of your sins so He can forgive you in His Son, His Savior who died for you?
Yes. By the promise of His Gospel, I believe that God loves me in His Son even though I am a sinner. For all my sin, I am sorry, and I ask God to forgive me of all my sin for the sake of the Holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ my Lord.
Upon this your confession and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, I announce His grace unto you, by forgiving you all your sin, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
The Service of our Lord’s Supper
Preface and Proper Preface – The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. We give thanks that Jesus humbled Himself as a servant and gave Himself as a sacrifice on a cross. Through His perfect sacrifice we are able to be reconciled to you and have Your peace and forgiveness. Therefore, with the whole company of heaven, we join in praising You today and forever saying: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the Highest!
Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Closing Prayer – Holy Father, we ask You now, by this blessed food and drink, to deliver Your Church from every evil, to teach it to love You perfectly, and make it truly one, even as this bread was made from many grains of wheat to become the carrier of the body of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and the wine was drawn from the fruitfulness of many grapes. Grant that we ever abide as branches of the Vine, Christ Himself, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen and Amen
