GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather   As we gather to worship and give our heartfelt praises to our gracious God, we are fulfilling our purpose as the crown of His creation.  As we worship our Lord and our Heavenly Father in joy and thanksgiving, we are doing what He has called us to do as His children, and we are being blessed as we respond to His blessings given to us.  It doesn’t get any better than that!

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “Gracious God, You Send Great Blessings”     LSB 782

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.

Opening Sentences Psalm 112 – Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes!  With my lips I declare all the just decrees of your mouth.  I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Confession and Absolution – Let us humble ourselves, then, before God; confess our sins to Him and implore His forgiveness in Jesus Christ His Son, our Lord.    All:  O almighty God, most merciful Father, I, a repentant sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have offended You.  By nature, I am a sinful creature.  In thought, word, and deed, I have continually transgressed Your Law.  Too often I have sought the easy road of ignoring the needs of others and considered only myself and my wants.  For this I justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of the sufferings and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a penitent and contrite being.  Forgive me all my sins and grant me the power of Your Holy Spirit that I may amend my sinful life and bear fruit in keeping with true repentance.    God be gracious to you and strengthen your faith.   Amen.  As you believe, so let it be.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen.

Kyrie      LSB 168 – In peace let us pray to the Lord.    Lord, have mercy.       For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.              Lord, have mercy.      For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.     For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.      Lord, have mercy.    Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen.

Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis – Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.  Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,  We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.  Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God; You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.    You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer.  For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.  Amen

Salutation – The Lord be with you.      And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on the hope of Your heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.    Amen

Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 58:1-9a  –    “Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.  Declare to my people their rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.  For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God.  They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them.  ‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and you have not seen it?  Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?’  “Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.  Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists.  You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.  Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves?  Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?  Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD?  “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?  Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?  Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.  Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

Epistle or New Testament Reading – 1 Corinthians 2:1-12 – And so it was with me, brothers and sisters.  When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.  For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.  I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling.  My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.   We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.  No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.  None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.  However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” — the things God has prepared for those who love him—these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.  The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.  For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them?  In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.  What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.

Verse –  Alleluia.  Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.  Alleluia.

Holy Gospel – Matthew 5:1-12 – The Holy Gospel according St. Matthew, the Fifth  chapter.   Glory to You, O Lord.        Jesus said: “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?  It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.  “You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.  “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.  Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”    This is the Gospel of the Lord.     Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
