GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather  Golfers enjoy getting a mulligan.  Kids shout after a mistake, Do Over!  As we look back on our lives, we see times that we wish we could use that mulligan, our Do Over, making a different decision or fixing a mistake we made.  Reality is that we cannot turn back time, but as a child of God, we are given something much better.  He gives us a new life—a fresh start that we are able to celebrate every day as we remember our Baptism and the riches God gives us through faith.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “All Depends on Our Possessing”  LSB  732

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen.

Opening Sentences – Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!  Serve the Lord with gladness!  Come into his presence with singing!       It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Confession and Absolution – All:  I have trusted in Your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.    Pastor: The Lord lifts up the humble; He casts the wicked to the ground.     A time of silence to reflect on those sins weighing heavy on our hearts          All:  Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed.  We flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.  O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

Almighty God has had mercy upon you and has given His only Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. In the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I, a called and ordained servant of the Word, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. He who began this good work within you will bring it to completion on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Kyrie – In peace let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.   For the Peace from above and for our salvation.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.     For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.      Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen

Hymn of Praise – This is the Feast  LSB 155

Collect of the Day –   O Lord, grant us wisdom to recognize the treasures You have stored up for us in heaven, that we may never despair but always rejoice and be thankful for the riches of Your grace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Old Testament Reading –  Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14  2:17-26 –  “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.  “Utterly meaningless!  Everything is meaningless.”  Vs12-14  I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.  I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens.  What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!  I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.  2:17-26  So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me.  All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.  I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.  And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish?  Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun.  This too is meaningless.  So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.   For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it.  This too is meaningless and a great misfortune.  What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?  All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest.  This too is meaningless.  A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil.  This too, I see, is from the hand of God,  for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?  To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God.  This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Colossians 3:1-11 –  Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.  Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.  For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.  Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.  Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.  You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.  But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.  Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.  Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

Gradual – Colossians 3:23–24a – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.

Gospel Reading – Luke 12:13-21 – The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the Twelfth chapter.  Glory to you, O Lord.      Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”  Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”     Then he said to them, “Watch out!  Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”  And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.  He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do?  I have no place to store my crops.’  “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do.  I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain.  And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years.  Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’  “But God said to him, ‘You fool!  This very night your life will be demanded from you.  Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’  “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”       This is the Gospel of the Lord.  Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed –  I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.   And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.  And I believe in the Holy Spirit,   the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life X of the world to come.    Amen.

Sermon

Prayers of the Church

We gather our Tithes and Offerings

Service of the Sacrament

Proper Preface – It is good, right, and salutary that we should at all times, and in all places give thanks to You O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God for the countless blessings You so freely give to us and to all creation.  Above all, we give thanks for showing Your love to us when You sent Your one and only Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid our sin on Him, putting to death all that is earthly in us.  As He died, we have died, and our life is hidden in Him.  As He is risen, we, too, shall rise and see Him when He appears again in glory.  Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life.  Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

The Words of our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ – As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

All:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer –  Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always.   Amen

SUNDAY SCHOOL

A new and retooled Sunday School is being proposed for Zion.  The goal would be to reach out to the Clyman community this fall.  It will be given a new name as it will not meet on Sundays.  An example could be Zion Bible Club.  Before this is offered, we will need people in place to help teach, organize and lead.  Contact Erica Goehl or Deanna Gochanour.   Thank you.

Please keep the following in your Special Prayers:

Congratulations to Felix & Janet Ortega on the birth of Great Neice, Hope, who is in the NICU at Froedtert Hospital. Prayers that she continues to get stronger every day.

Pray for the following who are going through cancer treatments or are in need of healing: Dawn Pint, Dee Wille, Dick Basol, Dana Meixner, and Bill Lehr.

We pray for Marti Chaveriat’s mother, Lorraine, who is dealing with heart issues and Dan and Marti’s friend who is going through treatments for cancer.

We keep in our prayers all in our congregation who recently had surgery, waiting for test results, and are in need of healing and comfort.

Milestone Birthday…On August 15th, long time member of Zion and current member of Good Shepherd in Watertown, Jeanette Singletary will celebrate her 90th birthday. Laurel Finger is her daughter. We’re hoping to shower her with cards. You can send them to PO Box 134 Clyman, WI 53016 or drop them in the basket behind the pews. Thank you for helping make this momentous occasion more special.

PLEASE REMEMBER…If you are the last person leaving the church, please be sure to check that all lights are turned off, and don’t forget about the bathrooms. Also, make sure that all the doors are locked. Double check them by giving the door a good tug after they have closed to make sure the lock has latched.

Donations/Memorials

Do you have a memorial/donation in honor of someone and are not sure what fund to donate to?    Council is recommending memorials/donations be directed toward ‘Current Trustee Projects’.  The current project they are working on is fixing the steeple.  There is a large list of other projects coming up, so the ‘Current Trustee Projects’ will be utilized for a while.   If you would rather give to something different, please contact our treasurer, Erica Goehl, for a different suggestion.
