Guests. Welcome to Zion. We are happy to have you worship with us. Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex. About Holy Communion: We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given. If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us. If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service. To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330. Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.
As We Gather To be the “favorite child” can feel good but also can be a source of competition, jealousy and at times hate. As we gather with God’s people in worship each week, we can be certain that our gracious God values all of us the same. There are no favorites, and He is pleased to see us grow in our faith as we hear His Word and are fed by His grace. Verse 10 of Psalm 84 states- “For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere”. There is nothing better than for God’s favorite people, which each of us are, to be gathered in His and our favorite place to be, His house of worship! It doesn’t get any better than that for a child of God!
Ringing of the Bell and Welcome
Hymn “O Worship the King” LSB 804
Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
Confession and Absolution – Let us now confess our sins to God, our Father.
All: Have mercy on us, Lord, and grant us Your forgiveness. We confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We repent of our sins, those known to us and those unknown as well. Create in us clean hearts, gracious Lord, and put new and right spirits within us that we may be reconciled to You and at peace with all people. We trust in Christ alone for the forgiveness that we seek today and at all times. Give us the Holy Spirit to guide and direct us into paths of righteousness and finally bring us to everlasting life. Amen. The almighty and merciful Lord grant us pardon, forgiveness, and forgiveness of all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis LSB 204
Prayer of the Day – Heavenly Father, You have called us to enter Your kingdom through the narrow door, Your Son our Lord, Jesus Christ. Guide us by Your Word and the Holy Spirit. Lead us now and always down the path that leads to the eternal feast of Your Son, Jesus Christ in heaven, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Psalm 50 (selected verses) – The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth. Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages. He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people: “Gather to me this consecrated people, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for he is a God of justice. “Listen, my people, and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel: I am God, your God. “Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”
Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 66:17-24 – “Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one who is among those who eat the flesh of pigs, rats and other unclean things—they will meet their end together with the one they follow,” declares the LORD. “And I, because of what they have planned and done, am about to come and gather the people of all nations and languages, and they will come and see my glory. “I will set a sign among them, and I will send some of those who survive to the nations—to Tarshish, to the Libyans and Lydians (famous as archers), to Tubal and Greece, and to the distant islands that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory. They will proclaim my glory among the nations. And they will bring all your people, from all the nations to my holy mountain in Jerusalem as an offering to the LORD—on horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels,” says the LORD. “They will bring them, as the Israelites bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the LORD in ceremonially clean vessels. And I will select some of them also to be priests and Levites,” says the LORD. “As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before me,” declares the LORD, “so will your name and descendants endure. From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before me,” says the LORD. “And they will go out and look on the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; the worms that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”
Epistle or New Testament Reading – Hebrews 12:4-24 – In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed. Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done. You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.” The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.” But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
Verse – Alleluia. People will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at the table in the kingdom of God. Alleluia.
Holy Gospel – Luke 13:22-30 – The Holy Gospel according St. Luke, the Thirteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” He said to them, “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ “But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’ “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.” This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ.
Hymn “You Are the Way, Through You Alone” LSB 526
Sermon
Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving – We give thanks to You Heavenly Father for having sent Your Son, to be our Redeemer, saving us from the power of sin, death, and the devil. Invited by Your grace and supported by Your love, we come to Your Table with thanksgiving and praise. Grant that we with true faith in Your words of promise receive the bread and wine, that is, the very body and blood of Christ, as a guarantee of the salvation that He purchased for us through His innocent suffering and death on the cross. Receive our prayers and praise and grant us Your abiding peace. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and praise with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

O Lord keep us faithful until You return to take us to be with you. Hear us now as we pray the prayer you taught us to pray:
The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

SUNDAY SCHOOL… A new and retooled Sunday School is being proposed for Zion. The goal would be to reach out to the Clyman community this fall. It will be given a new name as it will not meet on Sundays. An example could be Zion Bible Club. Before this is offered, we will need people in place to help teach, organize and lead. Contact Erica Goehl or Deanna Gochanour. Thank you.
Please keep the following in your Special Prayers:
Prayers for Pat Haase and her family, as her daughter Cheryl was given her crown of life on August 13th.
Pray for Dick Basol, Dawn Lake, and Wendy Sampson as they recover from a recent surgery.
Pray for the following who are going through cancer treatments or are in need of healing: Mary Jane Key, Dawn Pint, Dee Dee Wille, James Kreblin (Mary Jo Kohlhoff’s brother), Peggy (sister of Rita Weisjohn), Bill Lehr, (friend of Dick Weisjohn), and baby Hope (great niece of Janet & Felix Ortega).
We pray for Marti Chaveriat’s mother, Lorraine, who is dealing with heart issues and Dan and Marti’s friend who is going through treatments for cancer.
We keep in our prayers all in our congregation who recently had surgery, waiting for test results, and are in need of healing and comfort.
PLEASE REMEMBER…If you are the last person leaving the church, please be sure to check that all lights are turned off, and don’t forget about the bathrooms. Also, make sure that all the doors are locked. Double check them by giving the door a good tug after they have closed to make sure the lock has latched.
Donations/Memorials – Do you have a memorial/donation in honor of someone and are not sure what fund to donate to? Council is recommending memorials/donations be directed toward ‘Current Trustee Projects’. The current project they are working on is the steeple repair. There is a large list of other projects coming up, so the ‘Current Trustee Projects’ will be utilized for a while. If you would rather give to something different, please contact our treasurer, Erica Goehl, for a different suggestion.
