GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

AS WE GATHER – Today we are brought to the threshold of Holy Week.  This was the day the Jewish people chose the Passover Lamb.  How quickly things can change in a week!  On this Palm Sunday, we see Jesus enter Jerusalem with palms, a symbol of victory, strewn in the road and being waved.  Yet it was from that entry that Jesus went to show His true love—His passion—by dying on the cross on Friday.  That death showed His love for you.  By faith, we believe what Jesus did was for us. Everything about us—our sin, our eternal destination—changed that week because Jesus took the road from palms to passion.  Through the work of the Holy Spirit who gives and sustains your faith receive what Jesus did for you.  Your home in heaven was paid for with the King’s ransom—His own innocent blood.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn  Hosanna, Loud Hosanna          LSB 443

Invocation – The grace of our Lord X Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.  Amen.

Opening Sentences – John 12:12-15 – The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.  They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!”  “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”  “Blessed is the king of Israel!”       Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:  “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt!”

Our Opening Prayer – Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son when He came into His Holy City, grant that we may ever hail Him as our King, and when He comes again, may we go forth to meet Him with trusting and steadfast hearts following Him in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Confession and Absolution – Let us confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father.

All:  Eternal God, we confess that we were born sinful and have continued to sin in thought, word, and deed. O God, in Your mercy, forgive our sin and renew Your Spirit within us that we may joyfully follow Your will and gladly obey Your commandments. For the sake of Jesus, our Lord, forgive our sins and direct us in Your will so that we can live according to Your ways of compassion and love through Christ the Lord.

Upon this, your confession, I announce the grace of God to you.  In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Introit   Psalm 24:7–10; antiphon: Psalm 118:26 – Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!  We bless you from the house of the Lord.       Lift up your heads, O gates!  And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.  Who is this King of glory?  The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!  Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.  Who is this King of glory?  It is the Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory!       Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord.

Salutation – The Lord be with you.  And also with you.

Prayer of the Day – Almighty and everlasting God, You sent Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to take upon Himself our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross. Mercifully grant that we may follow the example of His great humility and patience and be made partakers of His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading   Zechariah 9:9-12 – Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!  Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!  See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.  I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken.  He will proclaim peace to the nations.  His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.  As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.  Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.

Hymn – “The King of Glory”           SEE BACK PAGE

Psalm  118:19–29 – Open for me the gates of the righteous; I will enter and give thanks to the LORD.      This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter.  I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation.  The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.  The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.  LORD, save us! LORD, grant us success!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD.  From the house of the LORD we bless you.  The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine on us.  With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.  You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, and I will exalt you.        Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the     beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Epistle   Philippians 2:5-11     In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:   Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!      Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Verse – He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on across.

Holy Gospel       Mark 11:1-10  The Holy Gospel according St. Mark, the Eleventh chapter.       Glory to You, O Lord.

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.  If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”  They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.  As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?”  They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go.  When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it.  Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields.  Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!”  “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”  “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”     This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn  All Glory, Laud, and Honor”       LSB 442

Sermon

Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Service of the Sacrament

Preface   2 Timothy 4:22 –     The Lord be with you.    And also with you.    Lift up your hearts.    We lift them to the Lord.  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.     With astonishing power and mercy, God has set us free from the power of evil that we may love Him above all things and our neighbors as ourselves, so along with the company of angels and all the heavenly voices, we praise and glorify You, now and forevermore, singing:

Sanctus     LSB 208

Prayer of Thanksgiving – We thank You for calling us in this time and place and for inviting us to Your holy Table. Joined together in the name of our Lord and in the communion of saints, we pray You to send Your Holy Spirit upon us to sanctify and renew us in body and soul for the sake of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen

The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ  1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 –  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.      Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.  Hear us now as we pray the prayer you taught us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always.    Amen.

Closing Collect – Gracious and righteous God, You sent Your Son for us who suffered and died for our sins and in our place.  Move us again with the power of that blessed sacrifice for sin, that by experiencing once again the passion and love of the crucified Lord Jesus, we may be directed by the Holy Spirit into lives of humble service, giving thanks and praise to our Savior, in whose name we pray.  Amen.

Closing Reading     Luke 23        With one voice they cried out, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”—a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder.  Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, but they kept shouting,   “Crucify, crucify Him!”    A third time he said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?  I have found in Him no guilt deserving death.  I will therefore punish and release Him.”        But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that He should be crucified.  And their shouts prevailed.  So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.  He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, but, Pilate delivered Jesus over to be crucified.

Benediction  Numbers 6:24–26 – The blessing of almighty God—the Father, the X Son, and the Holy Spirit—be with you now and forever.             Amen.
