As We Gather  From Pastor Dan, if you are like me, once in a while you look back on your life and evaluate where you are, and what you have done.  Ever get frustrated?  I seem to focus on all the good intentions I had but somehow got detoured and didn’t do them!  I know who did that, satan and my choice to follow him!  I then beat myself up with the law and feel so inadequate as God’s child.  Today we hear how perfection is coming.  God’s perfect Word is already assuring us of God’s forgiveness.  His perfect heart pursues lost souls, forgives repentant sinners, and His perfect plan includes His return to make all things right and take all who believe in Him to heaven.

Invocation and Opening Sentences – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.      Amen.     Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!  Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.  Our hope is our Lord Jesus Christ who overcame this world for us.

Confession and Absolution    Psalm 32:1–2 – Let us confess our sins to the Lord our God, and proclaim our trust in His salvation.      All: “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I hope.”  Almighty God, You spoke a perfect world into being, yet now Your creation bears the stains and scars of the sin Adam brought into Your perfect world.  Forgive us of the times our sin, selfish desires and sinful treatment of others added to the suffering around us, adding to the  evil of the world because we failed to do the good You ask us to do.  Forgive us, O God of all our sin.  You alone are faithful and just and will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I hope.”    Your hope is met by the redemption and renewal of our God in His Son, Jesus Christ, who was given to die for you, and for whose sake God forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen

midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous laws.  I am a friend to all who fear you, to all who follow your precepts.  The earth is filled with your love, Lord; teach me your decrees.

Prayer of the Day – O God, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that, ever mindful of Your final judgment, we may be stirred up to holiness of living here and dwell with You in perfect joy hereafter; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.     Amen.

Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 44:6-8 – “This is what the Lord says, Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.  Who then is like me?  Let him proclaim it.  Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come, yes, let them foretell what will come.  Do not tremble, do not be afraid.  Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago?  You are my witnesses.  Is there any God besides me?  No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.”

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Romans 8:18-27 –  For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.  For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.  For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.  For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.  And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.  For in this hope we were saved.  Now hope that is seen is not hope.  For who hopes for what he sees?  But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.  Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.  And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Holy Gospel – Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 – The Holy Gospel according St. Matthew chapter thirteen.   Glory to You, O Lord.    Jesus put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.  So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.  And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field?  How then does it have weeds?’  He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’  So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’  But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.  Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”  vs36-43  Then he left the crowds and went into the house.  And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.”  He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.  The field is the world, and the good seed is the children of the kingdom.  The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil.  The harvest is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels.  Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close of the age.  The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace.  In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.  He who has ears, let him hear.”  This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving –  Ever blessing Holy Spirit, flood our hearts with gratitude, that our thoughts, words, and actions would overflow with thankfulness for a God who sets His people free and seals them in the hope of their Savior.  Bring us near to Your glory, that given a glimpse of our God’s surpassing grace, we might live to declare His name and the redemption won for us by Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Father, one God, now and forever.   Amen.
