GuestsWelcome to Zion.  We are happy to have you worship with us.  Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex.  About Holy Communion:  We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given.  If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us.   If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service.  To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330.  Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.

As We Gather Jesus has not come to calm the world but to lead us into battle. That battle is inside of us, His call to take up the cross of faith, to deny self, and to follow Him.  He has already won the victory over death and the devil, and works to sanctify us in this truth.  We are the ones who take His message of life to the world.  As we share this message, we are encouraged that all that we do is and will be blessed by the Father.  He promises that in His Son all who believe in Him have a heavenly reward awaiting, simply because of living a childlike, trusting faith in their Lord.

Ringing of the Bell and Welcome

Hymn “O Worship the King”            LSB 804

Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.   Amen.

Opening Sentences – I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

Confession and Absolution – A time of silence to reflect on those sins weighing heavy on our hearts        All:  There is nothing good in me because of my sinful nature.  Your Law O Lord, condemns me if I do not repent.  Before You O Lord, I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.  Holy and gracious God, I confess that I have sinned against You this day.  Some of my sin I know—the thoughts and words and deeds of which I am ashamed—but some is known only to You.  In the name of Jesus Christ I ask for Your forgiveness.  Deliver me according to Your mercy and grant peace to my heart so that I may serve You with all my mind, heart, body, and soul.  Amen     By the mercy of God our Father, we are redeemed by Jesus Christ, and in Him we are forgiven.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Kyrie – In peace let us pray to the Lord.   Lord, have mercy.   For the Peace from above and for our salvation.  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.  Lord, have mercy.     For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.    Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.   Amen

Hymn of Praise – This is the Feast  LSB 155

Collect of the Day – Almighty God, by the working of Your Holy Spirit, grant that we may gladly hear Your Word proclaimed among us and follow its directing; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

Old Testament Reading – Jeremiah 28:5-9 –     Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord, and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen!  May the Lord do so; may the Lord make the words that you have prophesied come true, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles.  Yet hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people.  The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms.  As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”

Epistle or New Testament Reading – Romans 7:1-13 –    Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives?  Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.  Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive.  But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.  Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.  For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death.  But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.  What then shall we say?  That the law is sin?  By no means!  Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin.  I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”  But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness.  Apart from the law, sin lies dead.  I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.  The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.  For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.  So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.  Did that which is good, then, bring death to me?  By no means!  It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.

Verse – Alleluia.  Jesus said; Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.  Alleluia.

Gospel Reading – Matthew 10:34-42 – The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter.  Glory to you, O Lord.      Jesus said: “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth.  I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.  For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.  And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.  Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.  And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.  Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.  “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.  The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.  And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”  This is the Gospel of the Lord.  Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed – I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.     And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.     And I believe in the Holy Spirit,   the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life X of the world to come.    Amen.

Sermon

Prayers of the Church

We gather our Tithes and Offerings

* Service of the Sacrament *

Preface and Proper Preface –  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.   It is right to give Him thanks and praise.    It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation, humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross. Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

 Sanctus    LSB 161

Prayer of Thanksgiving –   Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

The Words of our Lord – Consecration of the Elements

Proclamation of Christ –    As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.       O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

The Lord’s Prayer –   Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.       Amen.

Pax Domini  LSB 163 – The peace of the Lord be with you always.   Amen
