Guests. Welcome to Zion. We are happy to have you worship with us. Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex. About Holy Communion: We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given. If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us. If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service. To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330. Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.
As We Gather The arrival of the Holy Spirit is a day of celebration. This is a day to rejoice in promises kept and anticipate greater things to come. Today’s festival is a bridge for the church. It connects the commemoration of the life of Christ (through Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, and Easter to the season centered on our life in Christ, beginning with Pentecost. The festival’s signature red color reminds us of the fiery arrival of the Spirit, the Spirit’s ongoing work as the heartbeat of Christ’s church, and the blood shed by believers past and present as they proclaim the crucified, risen, and ascended Christ.
Ringing of the Bell and Welcome
Hymn “Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord” LSB 497
Invocation- In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Opening Sentences – Psalm 104 – Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia. O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Confession and Absolution – Humble yourselves before God, confess your sins to Him, and implore His forgiveness. All: O almighty God, most merciful Father, I, a repentant sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have offended You. By nature, I am a sinful creature. In thought, word, and deed I have continually transgressed and broken Your law. For this I justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of the sufferings and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a penitent and contrite sinner. In Your mercy, forgive me all my sins and grant me the power of Your Holy Spirit that I may amend my sinful life and bear fruit in keeping with true repentance. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” and “no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Upon this your confession, I announce the grace of God to all of you. As a called and ordained servant of the word, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis LSB 204
Prayer of the Day – O God, on this day You once taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit. Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy consolation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Old Testament Reading – Numbers 11:24-30 – So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again. However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!” But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
The Epistle or New Testament Reading – Acts 2:1-21 – When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs, we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.” Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Gradual and Verse – I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. With the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.
Holy Gospel – John 7:37-39 – The Holy Gospel according St. John, the Seventh chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ.
Hymn “Holy Spirit, Light Divine” LSB 496
Sermon
Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayers of the Church
The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Preface 2 Timothy 4:22 – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who ascended above the heavens and, sitting at Your right hand, poured out on this day the promised Holy Spirit on His chosen disciples. For all this the whole earth rejoices with exceeding joy. Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing;
Sanctus LSB 208
Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, Father of nations, for You have had mercy on all flesh, sending Your Spirit to declare the salvation found only in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. By His atoning death and victorious resurrection, He has made satisfaction for our sins and now beckons all who thirst to drink deeply of the fruits of His cross. Prepare our hearts to receive His true body and blood at this Table, that we might be fed with the bread of life, and prepared to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth, quenching the nations with living water, namely the Gospel of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
