Guests. Welcome to Zion. We are happy to have you worship with us. Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex. About Holy Communion: We welcome to the Lord’s Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words “given and shed for you” forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given. If this is your confession and you are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us. If you are a visitor and would like to commune, please talk with Pastor Dan before the service. To help in preparing to receive Holy Communion open the front cover of the Burgundy hymnal or turn to pages 329 & 330. Gluten free wafers are available, please talk with an Elder or Pastor before the service if you would appreciate them.
As We Gather Today we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord! Our readings tell us to live our lives in hope and confidence, for our Lord is still with us no matter what is happening. Jesus’ promise about power from the Holy Spirit is ours, for we have been given faith in our great God. Whether we see His presence and power or not, Paul writes that the Father gave His Son complete authority to rule for our good. Jesus’ instruction to await power is now past tense; we have received the Holy Spirit and His power to proclaim forgiveness of sins to all nations. With the Help of the Holy Spirit we share a message of forgiveness which heals the mind and the soul. Forgiveness which gives comfort and strength to the weary and the overwhelmed to their lives today and their lives forever in heaven!
Ringing of the Bell and Welcome
Hymn “Alleluia! Sing to Jesus” LSB 821
Invocation – In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Opening Sentences – “Men of Galilee, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
Confession and Absolution – Psalm 32:1–2
Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. All: I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed by what we have done and by what we have left undone. You gave Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins. Forgive us, renew us, and cleanse us in heart and soul. By Your grace and the work of the Holy Spirit may we change our sinful lives from this day forward. We ask for this grace through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. God did not leave us without His power and love. Christ ascended to His throne above but is with us always. The Holy Spirit did not give us faith for a short time but for all our time on earth. Your sins were forgiven through the sacrificial death of Christ on the cross and by His glorious resurrection. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I announce His grace to you, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the X Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thanks be to God through our Risen and Ascended Lord. Amen
Our Response to God forgiveness – Psalm 32 – I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance.
Hymn of Praise – Gloria in Excelsis LSB 204
Psalm of the Day – Psalm 47:1, 5-8 – Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets. Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth; sing to Him a psalm of praise. God reigns over the nations; God is seated on His holy throne.
Prayer of the Day – Almighty God, as Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, ascended into the heavens, so may we daily ascend in heart and mind to His throne of grace and power to dwell with Him there, and because of our faith in Him as our Lord and Savior may we at our moment of victory over this world ascend to live with Him who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Our First Reading – Acts 1:1-11 – In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
Our Second Reading – Ephesians 1:15-23 – For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
Verse – Alleluia. God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets. Our Lord has promised; Behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Alleluia.
Holy Gospel – Luke 24:44-53 – The Holy Gospel according St. Luke, the 24th chapter. Glory to You, O Lord.
He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ.
Hymn “A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing” LSB 493
Sermon
Apostles’ Creed – I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayers of the Church
We gather our Tithes and Offerings
Service of the Sacrament
Preface 2 Timothy 4:22 – The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
Proper Preface – It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who after His resurrection appeared openly to all His disciples and in their sight was taken up into heaven that He might make us partakers of His divine life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:
Sanctus LSB 208
Prayer of Thanksgiving – Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. We believe that our Savior, whom the disciples saw ascend, is with us always as He has promised. Grant us to eat and drink faithfully of the fruits of Jesus’ cross and to receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood. Amen.
The Words of Our Lord – Consecration of the Elements
Proclamation of Christ 1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 – As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. O Lord keep us faithful until You return to take us to be with you. Hear us now as we pray the prayer you taught us to pray:
The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Pax Domini – The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen.

SUNDAY SCHOOL…
A new and retooled Sunday School is being proposed for Zion.
The goal would be to reach out to the Clyman community this fall. It will be given a new name as it will not meet on Sundays. An example could be Zion Bible Club. Before this is offered, we will need people in place to help teach, organize and lead. Contact Erica Goehl or Deanna Gochanour. Thank you.
Please keep the following in your Special Prayers:
Dee Dee Wille as she will be having surgery June 5th on her hand.
We keep in our prayers all in our congregation who are recovering from surgery, and all who are in need of God’s comfort and healing.
Please help yourself to the pictures on the table in the narthex.
